Living in Hawaii Then and Now

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

The word house or home is defined as a structure made for people to live in. In earlier times, man truly lived in a community. Everyone shared everything. Each individual brought his or her talents and skills, contributed to the community and worked for the good of the people of his community. In return he was accepted and belonged to a group of people he identified with and had a sense of security and well-being.

In Hawaii, the materials used for building homes were very basic and all-natural. We call the houses “grass huts” because the roof was thatched with clumps of grass, held in place with a large fish net to protect it from winds. The inside walls were thatched with leaves and the floor was covered with woven mats. The only decorations on the huts were feathers.

The village or settlement consisted of various houses, each built with a very specific purpose. The chief’s house was located on a prominent rise to reflect his position, and women and children were not allowed in. The living house was used by the extended families, who all slept under one roof.
And so it was then! Such homes still do exist, but only in the Polynesian cultural centers. Compare those to the homes we now have in Hawaii! At Luxury Big Island’s website, you can take a tour of all the wonderful homes that are available for you to call your own, like this one in North Kohala:

Come sway with us at our Luau!

Friday, June 25th, 2010

When you close your eyes and think of Hawaii….What comes to your mind? Grass skirts, swaying palms and beautiful dancing girls? Well, you are thinking what I am thinking – Luau!
Today the luau is as synonymous with Hawaii as the grass skirt. The best way to get a feel for any place is to soak yourself in the food and culture of the locals. So let’s talk a little about this enchanting phenomenon called Luau!

The Polynesian Luau is an exotic, South Pacific-style celebration of color, style, history, music, and dance. Women in grass skirts, men in face paint, authentic fire dancers, and traditional music showcase the cultures and traditions of Polynesia.

Luaus are enchanting experiences that tickle the nose with savory scents, entice the palate with delicious tastes, please the eyes with colorful entertainment, and bathe the ear in exotic music, leaving you with exciting memories and a full tummy.
Starting about 150 years ago, the term luau gradually replaced ‘aha ‘aina. Luau, in Hawaiian and other Polynesian languages, is actually the name of the taro leaf, which when young and small is cooked like spinach and is often mixed with other foods, creating Hawaiian favorites such as luau squid or luau chicken; but today, luau is the commonly accepted name of a Hawaiian feast.

Historically, the food and practices observed at an ‘aha ‘aina were rich with symbolism and the entire event was designed to unite the participants, similar to the way the old Hawaiians braided strands of coconut husk fiber, or sennit, into thicker ‘aha cords and rope. For example, certain foods might represent strength, while the names or attributes of other food items might relate to virtues or goals the participants hoped to achieve.
Luau’s are all about food, music and at the core is celebration of life itself! Luxury big Island wants to be a part of your celebration of life and living! Come browse our Luxury Big Island Real Estate Website and be aware of all the options that are available for you to come and be a part of this wonderful Big Island!
